Since moving back to Somerset from London, I have been messing about at being a sports coach and now – finally (perhaps for the first time in my life) I have a proper job teaching full time at a local girls’ school. And this year I have taken on the management of a portion of my father’s vegetable and flower garden.
How I balance the two will give me an insight into how my parents managed to turn this patch of Somerset field into an impressive piece of domestic cultivation when they moved here in 1976. I suspect the whole experience might also re-define my relationship with my father.
We’ll see how I get on.
